Yes, this is my day and it’s another lazy sunday. We’re all a bit tired still from our day out yesterday. I feel just as tired as when I went to bed last night. Age perhaps? It’s annoying, but whenever I’ve been out: to the gym, walking with “the girls”, or just an outing with the family; I feel exhausted and my poor legs ache like fun. I think it’s because I have a slow circulation and really there isn’t a lot I can do about it. Age and diabetes. I have read that I can help it with ibuprofen, but I don’t want to rattle any more than I already do from all the medication I have to take. So I just put up with it. Today’s practically compulsory pic is of the children in the catio. We’ve been letting them stay out all night as it’s been so hot. But last night we had to get them back into the living room for the duration. Large, splashy rain, thunder and lightening did not make Luna feel comfortable. Ollie was all right with it, but Luna wasn’t able to take refuge in the living room in case he laughed at her. So L and I hustled them inside, with extra Dreamies as compensation.
Small talk out of the way, I would like to write about the down-right scam that is SSL. You know what SSL is, the wonderful security thing we’re all supposed to have on our websites, so that the site can use https: instead of the clearly inferior http. Yes, I’m being sarcastic there. I mean, SSL is all very well if one is running a commercial site, or one where people need to log in. And you need a bit of extra security to deter the hackers. But for a personal static website it’s all a bit overkill.
Of course it’s not compulsory, but it is because if you don’t have it then the likes of Google Chrome go all pissy Victorian auntie and pull their skirts back from your nasty, grubby website. For a good while I couldn’t even log into this blog because Namecheap insisted I pay practically the same price as the damn domain to have SSL. Chrome went all hysterical when I tried. But I refuse to pay out twice for a domain. Don’t they know there’s a recession on for goodness sake? I call it greed.
So, I shifted my blog away from Namecheap hosting and went for a host that actually offers free SSL. Oh yes, it exists. Most of my domains use Let’s Encrypt, which is free. And don’t anybody give me a lecture about how it’s not good enough. It’s good enough for my mainly static, personal, Web 1.0 websites. I’m already reducing the number of domains I own. I don’t want to end up with a tiny portfolio of three. A .day domain costs £10 and a bit anyway. I will not pay half as much again for SSL.
Okay, rant over.
